Must Have – Shure SM7b

Perhaps Jesus never owned one, but seriously, this mic rocks on male vocals.

At work, we generally don’t have many opportunities to audition different vocal mics, so I rely on experience, research and educated guesses. Generally, I’ll put up an SM7 for male lead vox if:

  • The lead vocalist may sing somewhat loudly, and produces a wide dynamic range
  • His most recent album doesn’t reflect accentuated verbal articulation, or is otherwise tame in the 4-7k region
  • I want a somewhat growling character in the vocal
Here’s a poorly edited reel of artists singing through my SM7. In order, you’re hearing Charles Bradley, The Damnwells, Will Hoge, Grouplove, and Art Brut. I’ve used it on many more, but the more artists I put in that clip, the worse my editing gets. Enjoy the choppy audio!
